Margaritas are great for shots but most people just don’t know how to make them or haven’t really thought of doing it. It’s a nice way for people who enjoy drinking tequila but don’t like it straight up, and who can blame them? Yuck. Here are some basic instructions and a guide to make your very first margarita shot.

Fortunately, you don’t have to have special glasses for your margarita shots, so don’t worry about having to buy anything new. You can use your normal shot glasses, but remember that since you will be salting the rims, they need to be fairly thick. Shot glasses are usually pretty thick to begin with so that shouldn’t be a problem.

  • - So once you have your margarita shot glass picked out, wet the rim and put it upside down in the salt (Use a Salt Rimmer if you have one) to get it good and coated with the right amount of salt. If you want, you can let people do this themselves as it adds to the entertainment, plus some people like more salt than others.
  • - The amount of tequila you use can vary, but typically and an easy way of doing it without having to break out the measuring utensils is simply to fill it half-way. The type of tequila you use will of course vary, but from my experience Agave Blanco tequila is the best to use.

  • - This step varies, but for the sake of making this how-to easy enough, we will add 1/4 of Triple Sec. This too will vary depending on taste, but for my recommendation, 1/4 is a good amount to start with.
  • - Finally, add 1/4 lime juice from either a freshly cut lime (Probably the best option), or the small lime juice bottles they sell at the store.

A lot can vary from set to set, and also from your needs. If you are looking for a margarita set just for a small party, that you won’t use very often, it will definitely change what you need as opposed to trying to find one for a large party that you host frequently.

A good margarita set should have the glasses, pitchers and other accessories that you need to start and finish a perfect margarita, outside of the actual margarita machine of course.

It’s important for the pitchers to match the size of the glasses, because if you have a small pitcher and big glasses, the pitcher will become almost pointless. Also, where you plan on hosting these is important as well. It might seem trivial, but inside and outside can really change what kind of margarita set and accessories you might want to purchase. For instance, if you are hosting outside parties with a bunch of people in hot weather, you should go with smaller glasses and bigger pitchers so you can keep the party going and not worry about having everyone’s drinks melting on them and getting ruined.

Some of the basics you should look for in your margarita set:

  • - Enough glasses for your needs. From 2-12 is usually a good amount.
  • - A decent cutting board for slicing up limes, etc.
  • - A big enough tray to hold everything on makes everything easier as far as serving.
  • - Look for wide brim lids on the glasses, if you plan on doing a lot of salt-rimming.
  • - Find out if they are dishwasher safe so clean up will be a lot faster & easier.
  • - Multi-use is important if you plan on serving more than just margaritas in the future.
  • - Thick glass is important to avoid accidents.
  • - Clear glass makes the colors of the margaritas shine through much more clear which just looks nice.
